Econsultancy's first Content Marketing Survey Report from 2012 highlights exactly where the industry is at.

Highlights from the report include:
  • Over 90% of respondents believe that content marketing will become more important over the next 12 months.
  • Nearly three quarters (73%) of digital marketers agree that ‘brands are becoming publishers’.
  • Less than half of companies have dedicated budgets (34%) or individuals dedicated (46%) to content marketing.  
  • Increased engagement is the most commonly cited objective for content marketers, with 52% of in-house marketers and 58% of agency marketers listing this as one of their top three business objectives.
The survey looks at the amount and type of content marketing carried out by organisations, how many brands have a strategy in place, the tactics and channels they are using for content, ownership of content marketing within organisations, how publishers are using content marketing, and the challenges and barriers to success in this area.

The Content Marketing Institute's B2C Content Marketing: 2013 Benchmarks, Budgets, and Trends paints a similar story.

Key findings from the report include:
  • 86% of B2C marketers use content marketing, employing 12 individual tactics on average.
  • B2B marketers use social media more often than their B2C counterparts; however, B2C marketers consider it more effective (57%  of B2C marketers think social media is effective vs. 49% of B2B marketers). On average, B2C marketers use four social media platforms, compared with the five used by B2B marketers.
  • On average, 28% of B2C marketing budgets are allocated to content marketing, and 55% of consumer marketers plan to increase their content marketing spend.
